I’m new to social media. Any major tips? –Karen B.

May 18, 2015 Elyssa Friedland

My first piece of advice is to dip your toe into only one platform at first. I think Facebook is the most useful if you’re looking to connect with old friends and reach the broadest group. If you really only want to look at pictures, then I’d say Instagram. If you’re interested in celebrities and news stories, I’d go for Twitter. Getting started on all three at once will be too overwhelming. At the outset, you need to decide who to “friend” and let see your profile. If you think your boss or coworkers will find you online, think twice before connecting with them or before posting anything. And since I’m very concerned about Internet addiction, believing that social media may be at the root of it all, I suggest you stick to the 9 AM – 9 PM rule. Don’t let your screen be the first thing you see in the morning or the last thing you kiss at night.
